About 31 minutes later, Rose breaks a glass when her alarm goes off
Chronology
After witnessing a bizarre, traumatic incident involving a patient, a psychiatrist becomes increasingly convinced that she is being threatened by a strange entity. A few days before the September 30, 2022 release, the film’s actors appeared at various baseball games standing behind home plate, silent and smiling while looking at the camera, immobile despite the concern of fans in the audience while wearing Smile T-shirts. Soon, another appeared in the background with the crowd during the Today show. When the glass is shown at her feet, she is wearing socks. Seconds later, when he checks the door, he is wearing lace-up shoes. Based on what happens later at a later party, there are several continuity issues that may not be “mistakes”; but may actually be intended to indicate “breaks”; in Rose’s consciousness/mentality.
Rose Cotter: What are you?
Why are you doing this to me? The Abomination: Because your mind is so inviting. Paramount’s opening and closing logos have a curved line in the shape of a smile at the base of the mountain. ‘Smile’ this is not
I wasn’t expecting an eleven-time Oscar-winning masterpiece, but I was expecting an intense, groundbreaking scare like ‘Insidious’; or ‘Sinister’, where the film drips with creepy unease from start to finish. What ‘Smile’ does well is set up the jump scare, but unfortunately (and more importantly) ‘Smile’ fails to deliver. It forgets to deliver the scares in each of these sequences that it repeats throughout its two hour runtime. For example, the main character looks down a dark hallway as the music strains, the camera slowly zooms in, and then the phone rings so. LOUDLY. That is NOT a scare!
That is just lazy, and most of all, annoying
These “jump scares” happen throughout the entire movie, and they are utterly disastrous. I can respect jump scares when there is actually something scary at the end of the buildup and not just a devastatingly loud noise that has nothing to do with the tension that was simply wasted. An example of an ACTUAL jump scare would be when the lipstick demon first appears at the table in “Insidious.” THAT is a legitimate jump scare. The “Smile” plot; and the way the characters reveal it, is almost identical to “The Ring.” No new ground was broken, which was to be expected, but I was expecting at least a little more originality than a copy/paste story from “The Ring.” It’s also copied with a good portion of “It Follows,” but it’s a lot less than either film. What I did think was pretty good was the ending when the demon finally reveals himself. The design of the demon and what he does to his victims is actually pretty impressive/horrifying.
Too bad, because this film could have been an absolute chiller
Unfortunately, the film ends when we are introduced to the demon Smile. The music to this film was without a doubt the best and scariest part. The music reminded me of the music from Sinister, as it had something unpleasant about it that made it unsettling. Overall, this film has been done before and done MUCH better. It has its moments, but it moves on without getting scary for too long.6/10.
