As a child, he gradually introduces her to a deadly toxic plant

Referenced in the show Amanda the Jedi: I ALMOST Walked Out | The Best and Worst of TIFF 2023 (2023). There’s a gripping and terrifying Hawthorne story in which a father, a prominent avant-garde physician, fiercely protects his daughter. As she grows up, anyone who gets too close to her will suffer and die.
The woman is both beautiful and terrifying
The plant’s poison is infused into her lifeblood. “Don’t you like it,” he asks, “that no one can bring you down?” Her response is sharp. “Father, I would have preferred to love someone. » Jeanine is a theater director who tries, like the woman in Hawthorne’s story, to free herself from the shadow of heartless people. Suffering abuse from her father, her mentor, her husband, and now from an arrogant actor—abuse they call “love”—Jeanine tries to heal and overcome it without losing what is essential and good about her.
To find something different
She struggles to free herself from the traps set for her. “Remove one meaning and the others amplify.” » I love Egoyan’s films for their depth, their surprising twists, and their explorations of intriguing themes (passion, errors of judgment, abuse, trying to find a way forward after mistakes, love, perspectives other than my own, and more). Following a woman adrift in the wake of abuse, Seven Veils continues in typical Egoyan vein. The action takes place in the Canadian Opera Company building, just a few blocks from where I saw the film’s world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival. While Egoyan has spent too much time in theater for my taste, I understand why it was done.
Off-topic—why did Seyfried get surgery?
Egoyan directed the opera company’s actual production of Salome and cast much of it in Seven Veils. Even some of the actors from the actual opera are in the film as well. Jeanine is skillfully played by Amanda Seyfried. Not that she’s ugly now, but she looks so much better in Egoyan’s previous film, Chloe. (long sigh) Thinking back on Seven Veils, I love it more.
In Jeanine’s struggles, I see my own
Moving beyond the trauma of abuse is a fascinating subject. Someone who said they loved me hurt me so much. Sometimes it’s hard to see that I’m worthy of love.
