Forests surround villages
Chronology
Austria in the 18th century. Killing a baby gets a woman sentenced to death. Agnes readies for married life with her beloved. But her mind and heart grow heavy.
Depressioncomposed by Anja Plaschg
A gloomy path alone, evil thoughts arising.. Agnes likely has psychotic depression as " Individuals with psychotic depression experience the symptoms of a major depressive episode, along with one or more psychotic symptoms, including delusions and/or hallucinations". I recently watched the Austrian horror film π¦πΉ The Devil's Bath (2024) on Shudder. The storyline depicts a woman in the 1700s trying to survive with her new husband in a new home.
I adored the attire, settings, and depiction of the era
Initially, she is very happy and wants to have a baby. As her husband struggles sexually, she begins to get depressed and spirals out of control. When it appears something may be happening in the forest around her home, she starts to question whether she is going crazy or if there is a real threat on the horizon. This film is co-written and directed by Severin Fiala and Veronika Franz, known for Goodnight Mommy, and stars Maria HofstΓ€tter (Paradise: Faith), Anja Plaschg (Sicilian Ghost Story), and David Scheid (Dave). The Devil's Bath is very well crafted. The circumstances feel authentic, as does the desperation conveyed through the characters.
The acting is excellent
There is a dark cloud over the entire movie, and once you get to the "neck" scene, which is hard to watch, the dark and maniacal elements really come to the surface. The subplot involving the water and dead children is well developed, and the little boy scene is crazy. The ending blew my mind and surpassed my expectations. I really enjoyed this film.In conclusion, The Devil's Bath is a fresh and unique addition to the horror genre that's worth your time.
I would score this a 75/10 and strongly recommend it
