Writer Gary Dauberman told Den of Geek in June 2019 that his goal with the new version of Salem’s Lot means making vampires scary again
Chronology
An author returns to his hometown of Jerusalem’s Lot in search of inspiration for his next book, only to find the townspeople being attacked by a bloodthirsty vampire. He wants to move away from the sexier, more romantic undead that have plagued pop culture for much of the last quarter century, thanks to everything from Interview with the Vampire to Twilight to The Vampire Diaries. When Ben reads old newspapers on microfilm at the library, one headline reads “Local Couples Killed in Drunk Driving.” The paper was supposedly printed in 1956, at a time when the term “DUI” wasn’t in use yet. References Trog (1970).
Good action scenes
Sundown Written and performed by Gordon Lightfoot Courtesy of Warner Records By arrangement with Warner Music Group Film & TV License. I haven’t read the book so I can’t compare it to that. I loved the vampire aspect. It definitely had a nice creepy vibe.
More time to develop these relationships
It had the makings of a good horror movie, I just thought it would have been better as a mini series. We needed more time to get to know these characters better. I think Lewis does a really good job with what he’s given, but his character needs more development. His past plays no part in the story except for a vague “only outsiders win” thing; sort of.
He has absolutely no character
Like I thought him being a writer (other than being the obvious stand-in for Stephen King) would have a purpose, like maybe he was the one doing the research, but no. The only other thing we know about him is that his parents died when he was a kid and that also serves no purpose. Again, at least Lewis does a good job with what little he’s given. But as mentioned, I think a mini series would have been better to give more time to the characters.
